Let’s face it-one of the perks of teaching is the holidays (even if most teachers spend some of it working…). The downside is that going on holiday during the official, school holidays is VERY expensive!
But did you know that there are special travel discounts out there just for teachers??
A number of companies provide discounts or special offers for public sector workers (which include teachers) and there are membership organisations for teachers who provide benefits as an additional perk.
Before using any discount, make sure you read any accompanying terms and conditions. Some discounts may have stipulations about what proof of your teaching status is required and some offers may have to be booked in advance.
So go ahead and bag yourself a bargain by using the following when you book your next holiday!
By far the biggest range of travel benefits out there is provided by the NASUWT teaching union.
You need to join the union in order to take advantage of the special deals (you will get your first year free). These range from; airport perks such as discounts on parking and lounges, discounts on hotel rooms from major hotel chains, special offers on foreign holidays and self-catering holidays and reduced entry to theme parks and attractions.
The ITIC discount card will give you access to worldwide savings on flights as well as special offers at hotels and hostels.
The cost of the card is currently £12 or £15 per year depending on which type of card you choose.
Unfortunately the ITIC discount card is only available to full-time teachers or lecturers.
The Teacher Perks website allows teachers who have a school based email address to register. The website has a number of different ‘perks’ available to teachers including travel perks.
The majority of the travel perks are discounts on theme park and attraction tickets, so it’s great for teachers who prefer to ‘staycation’-but there are some, more general holiday offers.
If you are planning on hiring a car for part of your holiday, then check to see if Budget cars are available for your trip.
Budget cars offer up to 30% off car hire when you use the code D464700.
If Budget cars are not suitable for your trip then you could use Sixt who offer 5% off car hire (every little helps!).
Boundless is membership site for civil servants and public sector workers (teachers fall under public sector workers).
It currently costs £27 per year to join Boundless. There are numerous benefits (not just travel) that members can use. The travel benefits include money off travel insurance, cruises, airport parking, villas, attractions and days out.
Hilton Hotels have a public sector rate that gives public sector workers 30% off the best available, bed and breakfast rate at Hilton Hotels and 20% off at Hampton by Hiltons.
These rates are only available on weekends and must be booked in advance.
The Discounts for Teachers website provides a good round-up of different discounts, including travel discounts, for teachers.
There are long-standing as well as new offers on the website, so it is worth checking it out regularly to see if anything new has been added.
